The Department
The Art and Design department is a vibrant and creative hub in the heart of the School. The philosophy of the department is of an integrated department with all the staff working as a team, sharing in the planning and decision making at all levels of departmental work. This includes exhibitions and open days, moderation of examination work and organisation of trips and co-curricular workshops.
We hope to demonstrate the department's belief in the importance of drawing, design, visual language and ideas, by stimulating the imagination and creative energy of pupils through their contact with various media and tools in the workshop areas.
The current Art and Design Building includes a number of specialist workshop areas with easy access to a central " core" on both floors. This building provides facilities for Fine Art, 3D Design, Ceramics, Printing, History of Art, Photography and Fashion Textiles. The Merritt Centre provides and exceptional space for displaying work created from the Art and Design department and external Artists and Designers.
On the ground floor is the 3D Design workshop. The workshop is well equipped, and work is undertaken using a range of resistant materials such as wood, metal and plastic, with a strong emphasis on experimentation and iterative design. At one end of the open plan workshop is a metal work area including a forge and jewellery bays, at the other is a range of machinery and tools including a laser cutter and small 3D printer. Space as always is of a premium therefore it is essential the space is well maintained.
