Classroom Assistant

Purpose of the Role

• To provide classroom support primarily to the Infant and Upper Primary Departments
• To work with individuals or small groups of pupils under the direction of Learning Support
• To provide administrative support to Teaching Staff throughout the Junior School

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Quality of Care and Welfare of Pupils

• Assisting in playground supervision and wet playtime activities
• Liaising with class teachers to monitor pupil behaviour.
• Coordinating Infant ‘Playground Friends’
• Organising playground equipment
• Providing early morning P1/P2 play supervision.
• Escorting and supervising pupils within the school and on outings

• Quality of Learning and Teaching in the Classroom

• Encouraging language development and supporting literacy and numeracy development, under the direction of the classroom teacher
• Supporting and participating in children’s play activities eg by listening and talking with children, joining in play activities, supporting individual children where they need help
• Supervising and guiding pupils undertaking work set by the classroom teacher including practical activities.

• Needs of Pupils in Effectively Accessing the Curriculum

• Developing good teamwork with the classroom teacher and other staff who are supporting pupils
• Assisting pupils with their work and building positive relationships with them by use of praise etc.

• Assist in the Organisation of Classroom and School Resources

• General administrative duties, including filing of pupil records, letters, tracking files etc.
• Preparing, collating and cataloguing learning materials as required
• Maintaining stock, storage and distribution of resources as required
• Preparing and mounting wall displays

We have a part-time opportunity, working 30 hours per week, Monday-Friday, for a dedicated and enthusiastic Classroom Assistant who would enjoy working as part of our experienced, qualified team in a lively and friendly environment.

Skills and Qualifications

• A Classroom Assistant/Playworker qualification or be willing to work towards this.
• Registered with SSSC at support worker level.
• Experience of working with children
• The ability to build good relationships with children, teachers, parents and carers.
• A basic understanding of how children develop and learn.
• Flexibility and creativity
• The ability to work as part of a team.
• Good reading, writing and numeracy skills.
• Patience and a sense of humour
• The ability to manage groups of children and cope with challenging behaviours.
