About the job
We welcome applications from all communities and we don’t discriminate against any identity. We’re interested to hear from you, regardless of your background.
Are you highly resilient with the ability to remain calm and professional in distressing situations?
Would you like to join a team that makes a difference with every call?
Can you help us provide a vital service to the public and seafarers when they need it most?
We need dedicated and dynamic people to join us here at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and we'd love to hear from you.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) implements the government’s maritime safety policy in the United Kingdom and works to prevent the loss of life and occurrence of pollution on the coast and at sea.
Safer lives. Safer Ships. Cleaner Seas.
Our vision is to be a world-leading organisation, accelerating the transition to sustainable shipping with non-negotiable safety standards. We put our people, our customers and our planet at the heart of everything we do.
You will play an integral role in coordinating emergency responses to incidents relating to Coastguard missions, gathering and analysing information to inform operational plans and enable delivery. You will also provide essential maritime safety advice to the mariner, coastal users and our partner organisations.
This is a challenging but rewarding role that would require resilience and working calmly under pressure, sometimes in stressful and emotional situations.
The role holder must be able to competently operate and update all HMCG systems and communication mediums including 999 and distress and urgency traffic in order to support an effective, efficient, and prompt response to incidents relating to the 6 Coastguard functions.
Maritime Operations Officers are required to work a 12-hour shift pattern (both day and night shifts) to allow HMCG to provide its 24 hour emergency service to the public, 365 days a year. On average the shift pattern equates to 37 duty hours per week over a 12-month period. As such, this position attracts a number of allowances to reflect the shift working and unsociable hours.
This is a Full-Time post.
About You
Due to the nature of the role, you are likely to be exposed to situations and information of a sensitive or traumatic nature which may be emotional and/or distressing to you. Therefore, you will need a high level of resilience to be able to deal with these calls in a professional manner whilst remaining composed.
You will be reliable and able to work calmly in a busy operational environment whilst using your initiative and professional judgement to achieve the best outcomes in difficult situations.
Excellent communication skills are required for this role, with a professional telephone manner and the ability to listen and question well. You are well-organised, with good administration skills, and strong attention to detail.
You are someone that enjoys working closely within a team, using your skills and knowledge to contribute to achieve common objectives.
To be successful in this role you will be required to have a good level of numeracy skills, and be IT literate with the ability to multitask.
We are looking to recruit people who want to develop and grow with us, and in return we can offer a full training programme and ongoing support to enable you to become the very best in Maritime Operations.
Please note this role is subject to health standard requirements as per the attached document.
